Trifluoroacetic acid

Details

Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA molecular formula: CF3COOH) is also known as trifluoroacetic acid. It is a colorless volatile fuming liquid with a similar smell to acetic acid, hygroscopic and pungent odor. It is strongly acidic due to the electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl group, and its acidity is 100,000 times stronger than acetic acid. Melting point -15.2℃, boiling point 72.4℃, density 1.5351 g/cm3 (1℃). It is miscible with water, fluorinated hydrocarbons, methanol, ethanol, ether, acetone, benzene, carbon tetrachloride, and hexane. It can partially dissolve carbon disulfide and alkanes with more than six carbon atoms. It is an excellent solvent for proteins and polyesters. It is also an excellent solvent for organic reactions, and can obtain results that are difficult to obtain in general solvents. For example, when quinoline is catalytically hydrogenated in general solvents, the pyridine ring is preferentially hydrogenated, but in trifluoroacetic acid, the benzene ring is preferentially hydrogenated. Trifluoroacetic acid decomposes into fluoroform and carbon dioxide in the presence of aniline. It can be reduced to trifluoroacetaldehyde and trifluoroethanol by sodium borohydride or lithium aluminum hydride. It is stable above 205℃. Ester and amide derivatives are easily hydrolyzed. Therefore, it can be used to prepare sugar, amino acid and peptide derivatives in the form of acid or anhydride. It is easily dehydrated to trifluoroacetic anhydride under the action of phosphorus pentoxide. Trifluoroacetic acid is an important fatty fluorine-containing intermediate. Due to the special structure of trifluoromethyl, its properties are different from other alcohols. It can participate in a variety of organic synthesis reactions, especially in the synthesis of fluorine-containing medicines, pesticides and dyes. The demand at home and abroad is increasing, and it has become one of the important intermediates of fluorine-containing fine chemicals.
